The Internet

To know what the Internet is, we first have to understand the differences between the Internet and www also known as the World Wide Web, some might not know but they are different. The internet is considered to be an infrastructure that allows for communication and transfer of data, and it is also considered to be a public domain/connection between many devices which together create a huge network of systems, on the other hand, the web (www) is considered to be a type of subset of the internet and also used to access and share the data stored in this infrastructure. Together they create what many of us utilize daily.

Now that we know what is the internet, the next question is when and by whom was it created. Around the year 1960s computers were already connected to the ARPAnet which was a space network of computers that had the ability to transfer information between each other but it was only a few years after, more specifically around the end of the 1970s, that an American computer scientist called Vinton Gray Cerf invented the internet, and not only did he play an imperative role in its creation it but he also was the inventor of two types of protocols in which we extensively use today, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP).
Even though one of the main achievements of the internet today was to give people the ability to overcome communication barriers, the reason that made scientists actually take technology to another level was the Sputnik scare. Before Sputnik was launched, classes such as calculus, physics, and chemistry were not provided in schools as it is nowadays, but after Sputnik, these courses were then added. Their purpose was not only to create what we know today as the internet but also weapons, defense systems, and many other things.
As I have mentioned before the internet was created around the 1970s but its official birthday is considered to be on January 1 of 1983. The reason behind this is that prior to this time period, computer networks just did not have a quality way of communicating with each other. As I mentioned before, Cerf was the creator of TCP and IP, which were imperative to provide a good quality of communication for the computers, which we use nowadays.
As a result of the invention of the internet, communication barriers all over the world were removed. Now people from all over the country can talk to their family members and it allows for people to get to know other cultures and values, although it also brought along some negative traits such as a huge increase in the lack of privacy and security. With the evolution of technology and the access of billions of computers, hackers can steal personal information which can be used for identity theft and much more.
